VISITING DUAL INTERNATIONAL RECEIVES COLONY CAP

14th Oct 2019

The HKRU welcomed two very special visitors to King’s Park Sports Ground last Saturday, as former Hong Kong and Scotland international Ian Smith and wife Julie dropped by the Saxo Markets Premiership Super Saturday, where Vice Presidents Jamie Scott and David Bruce presented him with his Colony cap.

Ian played for Hong Kong between 1972-74 whilst stationed here as a dentist in the army, and was in the team that finished runners-up to Japan in the 1972 Asian Tournament.

Prior to his sojourn in Hong Kong Ian won 8 international caps for Scotland between 1969-71, the sixth in the line of Heriot’s FP full-backs to have played for their country: Dan Drysdale, Tommy Gray, Ken Scotland, Colin Blaikie, Ian Smith and Andy Irvine

Ian remembers his time in Hong Kong fondly, and recounts some stories from those days in his recently published rugby autobiography 'A Full Back Slower Than Your Average Prop' which is available from Waterstones and Amazon.
